Patient Preparation

-  Pregnancy and Nursering are absolute contraindications for RAIU (Radioactive Iodine Uptake).

-  Withdraw thyroid medications if requested by attending physician.

-  Avoid:

1) Recent ingestion of foods rich in iodine content and 2) Use of contrast material. The first one, may block iodine thyroid uptake by competition. Indicate appropiate diet. The second one, if done in previous 4 weeks, could also limit thyroid iodine uptake. Pospone procedure if necessary.

-  Fasting of at least 4 h previous to and 2 h after giving radioiodine.

-  Administer orally same amount of radiotracer used to prepare the reference "phantom" standard (100% of dose).
