Congenital Hypothyroidism
Male 3 year old with congenital hypothyroidism, being treated with levothyroxin (T4), 40 ug/day. Underwent 99mTc thyroid scintigraphy, in upper row. There is normal thyroid gland uptake in the cervical region. Images obtained with 99mTc sestamibi gave similar information to the 99mTc pertechnectate scan, though with lower uptake and resolution, in lower row (1,2).
If there is no possibility to withdraw thyroid hormone therapy, 99mTc-MIBI may be employed to visualize the gland (2).
